Photo by National OmbudsmanThe European Union's Ombudsman Nikiforos Diamandouros is planning to appoint a Bulgarian lawyer as his legal advisor after the Balkan country's accession on January 1, 2007.

The Bulgarian will consult Diamandouros on legal matters and cases emerging from the country. Bulgaria's own ombudsman Ginyo Ganev and chief prosecutor Boris Velchev both vowed to help Diamandouros handpick the candidate.

The EU ombudsman and his Bulgarian counterpart met with Velchev on Monday to discuss the relationship between the Prosecutor's Office and the institution of the ombudsman. The three talked about protecting the rights of Bulgaria's citizens and the role of an ombudsman could play when applying civic control over the court administration.

Diamandouros then met with President Georgi Parvanov and the two talked about the new possibilities that will open before the Bulgarians once the country joins the EU.
