Information days for promoting the ombudsman institution on local level

In September 2002 the Center for the Study of Democracy launched a series of information days, devoted to the establishment of local ombudsman institutions in Bulgaria. The campaign is organized with the assistance of local authorities and non-governmental organizations in different regions and municipalities in Bulgaria. The information days are held both in municipalities where civic mediators already operate and in ones where such institutions do not exist. The main objective of the initiative is to popularize the local mediators as a new human rights protection mechanism through informing the citizens on the legislative framework of local self-governance, the possibilities for direct or indirect civic participation and the new forms of public control in the municipalities and through improving the understanding of the possibilities of the ombudsman to mediate between citizens and authorities in order to achieve trust, dialogue, transparency and responsiveness of the administration.
